Ever since I entered into the world of business intelligence, the focus has always been on the tools. Face it, they are cool (for the most part). End-users want to see wiz-bang graphics, nifty graphs and other cool visuals.
 
While these tools to depict information are absolutely critical to enabling more effective data analysis, it is not what business intelligence is all about. Business intelligence is about understanding data to help make your business more productive. The end goal of any business intelligence strategy in the enterprise should be to enable better understanding of the data.
 
To facilitate better understanding of the data, there are three key elements: technology, process and, most importantly, people. Technology always gets the front row in the discussion, but it is--in my opinion--the least important. It is relatively easy to deploy technology to support business intelligence; hundreds of vendors can help you do this. However, the process and people part of the equations are much more complex and require systemic organizational alignment and investment.
 
Business intelligence is an enabler that must be deeply interwoven into core business processes.
