Six Steps In the PM Evolution
From its slow but steady emergence as a recognized profession to its growing presence in business, government and academia, the practice of project (and program and portfolio) management continues to evolve. Here are six significant advances over the past 25 years.
Two retired Air Force officers, who sought to bring increased efficiencies to government projects through a relatively new concept known today as project and program management consulting, founded my company, Robbins-Gioia, in August 1980. As we conclude our year-long 25th anniversary celebration, I’ve been reflecting on the incredible changes I’ve seen in project management over the last quarter-century — from a new approach to managing business to a recognized, well-respected discipline with best practices, educational curricula and professional certifications. Project management continues to grow and succeed because it has evolved to provide discipline to changing business needs. I’ve identified key drivers along that journey and how the field of project management responded in a list I call “The Significant Six.” Each of these advances in project management is inextricably linked with the others, so they are not necessarily listed in order of importance.
