Young PMs--and all career-builders for that matter--pride themselves on being connected 24/7 and reachable from practically anywhere. Their worst nightmare is that they’re stuck in some remote place where they can’t be reached.
 
It happens--but not that often, because there are so many incredible communication gadgets available. They never stop coming, and each one is more sophisticated than the last. Cell phone technology is so slick that the basic device that does nothing but allow you to make and receive calls is already considered outmoded.
 
It kind of makes you wonder. Read on and find about the flip side of obsessive connectivity few people have yet to grapple with.
 
It’s gotten to the point where your credibility and career-positioning are tied to how connected you are. I’ve dubbed it your “connectivity quotient.” A high connectivity quotient--above 90 percent--means that you’re a very desirable, fast-track, cutting--make that bleeding--edge kind of person who goes out of his way to be armed with the newest and finest connectivity gadgets on the market. It demonstrates that you understand their importance and are willing to buy the best--and they can get pretty pricy--and are willing to put in the hours learning how to use them. And that’s a complex feat in itself.
