An academic research study explores the importance of project management best practices and methodologies to strategic execution in organizations. This executive summary of the findings supports some general views of previous studies but also maps out a framework for further inquiry.

Project management practitioner Stephen Lynn, a doctoral candidate at Kennedy Western University, recently conducted a 62-question survey of randomly selected ProjectsAtWork.com subscribers to gather quantitative information on the importance of specific project management initiatives to their organizations. In addition, survey questions assessed the presence of specific project management practices, and organizations’ effectiveness in executing corporate strategic plans through project management initiatives. Here he presents an executive summary of the data, which he is further developing in support of an academic dissertation research project.
 
Prior research has indicated that two-thirds of executives of U.S companies say that the ability to execute existing corporate strategic initiatives and to respond to changing business opportunities and technologies is critical for their success.
