A new book provides an easy-to-understand, yet thorough road map for implementing a scaleable earned value management system. In this review, some misconceptions about EVM are also addressed.

Implementing an earned value management system (EVM) can be overwhelming, and most organizations attempting it for the first time have that deer-in-the-headlights look. But it does not need to be scary. First of all, taking the time to understand the basic concepts of EVM is critical to a successful implementation. I am continually amazed at how many companies approach EVM without understanding the basics as well as its role in project management. EVM is project management, and it is not useful if it is not implemented under that principle.
 
The Earned Value Management Maturity Model (Management Concepts; 2006) is a thorough and progressive approach to implementing earned value management. Written by Ray Stratton, president of training and consulting firm Management Technologies and vice president, research and standards for the PMI College of Performance Management, this 11-chapter, 176-page book shows the reader how to create a scaleable EVM system than can evolve into an increasingly mature model to meet internal of government-directed standards.
