Project Management

Kick It In

Here's a checklist of important areas to cover during your project kickoff meeting:

How a project starts often determines how it ends. The kickoff meeting could be the most important meeting you hold. It's called the kickoff meeting because it sets everything related to the project in motion. And like the kickoff to start a football game, this event doesn't guarantee project success, but a poorly executed one can put you and your team at a big disadvantage.

In football, the coach sets the tone for the game long before the clock starts running, explaining what is expected, how it will be achieved, and which players will do what things to make it happen. On a project, the project manager should do the same at the kickoff meeting by defining each team member’s role, reviewing project parameters and establishing procedures for communication, change control and documentation. Here’s a checklist of objectives to cover during the kickoff meeting:

__ Introduce team members.
__ Communicate the sponsor's vision.
__ Present constraints.
__ Establish a commitment to risk management.
__ Address all participants' questions.
__ Promote ownership of the project.
