Showing a commitment to forward thinking in both words and demonstrated actions, the project management office of global technology services company EDS has been recognized as the “PMO of the Year” by the Center for Business Practices.

Project Management Offices continue to gain recognition and prevalence within organizations, serving as centralized forces to unite business strategy with successful project execution. In an attempt to recognize and promote PMOs, the Center for Business Practices, the research and publications arm of PM Solutions, held a contest in 2006 to grant its first “PMO of the Year” award. The winner was EDS, a global technology services company, for its “Office of the Multi-Year Plan.”
 
The “Office of the Multi-Year Plan” (OMYP) is what EDS calls the PMO that supports its corporate global transformation program. The OMYP’s goal is to ensure that strategic investment decisions are made and effectively managed at an enterprise level, says Ruth Williams, director of the OMYP, which was implemented in early 2005 and started operating in earnest a few months later. “We had a few false starts before we really succeeded,” Williams recalls. “The gap occurred in recognizing quite how hard it is to do this.”
