A few years ago, most of the technology action was happening in cities like San Jose (in the heart of Silicon Valley), Los Angeles, Boston and Chicago. These expensive, high-tech meccas are still doing innovative things, but so are out-of-the-way places like Buffalo, N.Y., and Boise, Idaho, and even unlikely rural backwaters no one has ever heard of.
 
The big message is that if you’re looking for a creative tech company where you can demonstrate your talents and be part of a team that creates the next great tech gadget, don’t just look at established, superstar giants. Check out the smaller up-and-coming, well-funded start-up companies. There are many bleeding-edge companies out there that are working on incredible projects that will potentially have a great impact on our lives.
 
Maybe you’ve forgotten, but household-name companies like Apple, Microsoft, Intel, Sun Microsystems and even the legendary Big Blue, IBM, were once tiny companies. They all were an entrepreneur’s dream and started on a shoestring.
 
That little company just outside of town with a weird name on a tiny placard could be building headline-grabbing technology. Most important, it could open some amazing career doors for you.
