The papers on either side of my laptop docking station are arranged in relatively neat stacks. The contents of the stacks are continuously sifted and sorted as new documents are added and old ones discarded. In this way, everything I currently need is (a) within easy reach and is (b) organized in a quasi-orderly fashion, so that I can find what I am looking for fairly quickly.
 
The affordances of paper enable me to work in ways that are not available to me when the same information is rendered on my laptop and reassures me in a way that bits and bytes do not, especially since August 2003, when a rolling electricity grid failure blacked out large parts of north-east America. As the lights went out, I scooped up the ancestors of those stacks and carried on working while my paperless colleagues around me stared blankly at their impotent workstations.
 
To my left are five stacks of five or six documents, fanned out like an upturned poker hand. I can see just enough of the top page of each document to identify its contents, comprising such things as various product requirement and functional specifications, an MS Project timeline (in both Tracking Gantt and HTML formats) and an issues log downloaded from a SharePoint list. This is my “hot” deck and advertises what I am working on and what is important to me.
