In her book Project Management in the Real World (BCS Publishing), veteran project manager Elizabeth Harrin offers 10 Golden Rules for success:
 
1. Don’t be afraid to challenge management. Remember that not all projects are based on a well-thought-out, competent idea. If the project is going to be a failure, explain why it should be stopped.

2. Don’t promise an end date before you have really worked out the tasks involved.

3. Projects change the status quo; they change themselves. Communication is essential at all points through the project lifecycle to ensure understanding and maintain credibility.

4. Find what motivates stakeholders and give it to them in return for their critical participation.

5. Identify problems early when they are still small and can be corrected without significant cost.

6. Plan creatively to slash time out of the schedule, and get the support of your sponsor for when you have to cut through office bureaucracy.

7. A list of risks is not enough — define risk responses, allocating an owner and carrying out activities to mitigate the risk.

8. Enhance your profile within your organization — make sure you are recognized for your skills.
