IT Critical to Healthcare Industry Needs
New survey of healthcare IT professionals shows security, staffing and technology adoption are among the top challenges in meeting patient safety and satisfaction goals.
Implementing technology to reduce medical errors and to promote patient safety continues to be a top priority in the healthcare industry, driven by a focus on quality of care and patient satisfaction, according to the 360 healthcare IT professionals who participated in the 18th Annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Leadership Survey.
Regarding their current and future top IT priorities and the importance of IT applications, survey participants most frequently identified implementing technology to reduce medical errors and promote patient safety as the current priority, as well as the top priority in the next two years. In addition, nine of the top ten healthcare applications identified as being important for the future were clinical systems. Topping the list are electronic medical records, computerized practitioner order entry and clinical information systems.

Financial support: Financial support for IT continues to be an issue for healthcare IT professionals. Twenty percent of respondents cited lack of adequate financial support as the most significant barrier to successfully implementing IT at their organization.
