Recession-Safe Job: Project Manager

Americans are finally accepting the fact that they’re in a recession and that their jobs may be in jeopardy. It’s amazing to think that there has been any doubt about the state of the economy. All the critical indicators have been pointing to a marked and continuous slowdown. The stock market has plummeted in some stomach-turning rollercoaster moves, the real estate market is in the proverbial toilet and the construction industry has slowed to a crawl.
 
Layoffs are everywhere. It took President George W. Bush a long time to publicly acknowledge that “our economy has slowed.” The evidence: Employers slashed 63,000 jobs in February, the most in the past five years. Unless the tides turn, certain sectors will be hit harder than others.
 
Even some technology companies are feeling the recession’s shock waves. For the most part, many technology jobs are safe. And so are jobs in health care, which encompasses hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient facilities, pharmaceutical companies and medical instrument and supply companies. Name a healthcare area or industry--from the mundane to the highly specialized--and you’ll find a shortage.
 
Except for industries that have been hit hard by the recession (real estate, mortgage banking, construction and home improvement), most sales and marketing people are safe. Many government jobs…
