Congratulations! You’ve chartered your PMO, obtained senior management support and even elicited a few volunteers to contribute to the COP. You’ve brainstormed a few activities but are stuck on what activities should be hosted by the COP. Below are just a few ideas that have been applied to previous project management communities of practice.
Sponsor a webcast on a relevant PM topic
Hosting a webcast on a relevant project management topic is an easy activity to implement. If you have a meeting room, a projector and an Internet connection, you can leverage the thousands of canned webcast presentations available on the Web.
The key is to find a webcast that is relevant to your COP’s target audience. I often search Microsoft.com, cio.executiveboard.com and pmo.executiveboard.com for relevant PM webcasts. Another useful site is www.pmconnection.com. The benefit of a webcast is you don’t need a formal speaker since the presentation provider has already bundled the slides and audio files. PM COP participants don’t need to attend the meeting in person and can watch the webcast at their convenience.
After the webcast, consider having a Q&A session or have a representative from your company speak to how the material relates to the strategic plans in the organization. It always helps to have a few canned questions ready to encourage
