IT decision-makers and PMs are looking down the short road to 2009 and scratching their heads trying to figure out when the economy is going to stage an aggressive turnaround. They know it will happen; the problem is that they’re not quite sure when. Since predicting the future with any degree of certainty is an educated crapshoot at best, organizations are likely to get closer to a true reading by hiring astrologists. Nevertheless, we found a few smart pundits who think they have a reading on tomorrow.

Choosing--and Pitching--the Right Projects
Greg Baker, CFO of Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based IT consulting company Logicalis, says that IT pros are looking at the rocky road ahead and trying to figure out which IT projects will be successful in 2009. As Baker sees it, the areas that could be hardest hit are application development and server upgrades. “Projects in these critical areas are likely to be postponed,” he says. Baker says that putting these projects on hold could have a boomerang effect because they’re likely to stall new projects that depend upon them for advancement. Yet, trends least affected could be emerging technologies such as Web 2.0 applications (social and mobile connectivity) and business intelligence (self-service, improved data structure and mining).
