Firmly established as a distinct discipline that can deliver real value and benefits to companies, both in the short-term and for the long haul, project portfolio management enters 2009 with momentum. But many challenges and changes are on the horizon. Here, a leading PPM analyst shares his thoughts and predictions.

Matt Light is a research vice president at Gartner Inc., leading the firm's project portfolio management research community. He took a few moments recently to talk to PPM Executive about the current state of the PPM world, what business tremors shook the landscape in 2008, and what may be ahead for enterprise solutions.
 
How big is the project and portfolio management industry right now?
That's a pretty open-ended question. There are so many dimensions to the project and portfolio management industry. If you look at the growth in the number of project and program managers in enterprises, and all the work that they do, and if you look at all the professional services that are available to support project and portfolio management, and if you look also at the various market segments for PPM tools — I think what you'll see is an industry with a lot of tentacles that continues to thrive.
