Modeling Reality

Some of the principles behind the latest modeling software used in architecture and engineering design work can be applied to the realities of managing projects. They also serve to reaffirm the importance of good old intuition.

From the beginning of creative history until very recently, the design process began with a hand sketch, be it on a piece of papyrus, paper or a napkin. With the advent of computers, many designers began to skip the paper-and-pencil process and work completely digital from the start. In either case, the meaning of the conceptual sketch still must be fully understood before it can be developed further. If the designer next in line to develop the concept has misinterpreted the intent of the designer who created the sketch, it will cause trouble for the project manager. There’s a timeless problem here.
 
No matter how good a drawing is, it is still a drawing — a collection of lines and curves on paper or a computer screen. It’s the perceiver’s mind that puts it all together and makes it comprehensible as a representation of reality. This is how the creative process has always worked. Not anymore.
