The first step to implementing such a solution is scouring the market for the right one. The good news is that CIOs are discovering that not only are there many solutions out there, but they’re also getting better every year.

A good example is CiRBA’s product, which automatically analyzes a server installation and recommends ways to consolidate hardware using virtual servers instead of physical ones. Analysts tested the product and gave it rave reviews. They said that other tools tackle pieces of the analysis, such as examining server utilization levels to plan capacity, yet the CiRBA tool is comprehensive, allowing users to factor in technical, business and workload constraints specific to their operations.
