Positioning for Recovery

Okay, we are in a recession and even though you might still be licking your budget and staff reduction wounds, it won’t go on forever.  At some point in the not too distant future, management is going to turn their eyes from survival to growth, so it is time to start positioning IT for recession recovery.  Barring any more horrendous events, we could see the recovery begin as early as 2010.  Will you be ready? 

If you wait for the green light from management, you will most likely fall short of their hunger for progress.  So, while things are a bit slow, the time is perfect for planning and mobilizing for action.  Let there be no doubt that when the money frees up, the competition for funds will heat up.  Those who are best prepared and organized will most likely get the lion’s share of monies.  Here are some tips that you might find useful in positioning IT to hit the ground running when the recovery begins.

Develop Infrastructure Improvement Business Cases

While money is scarce, take time to develop infrastructure improvement plans.  Put your vendors to work and have them help shape a plan that resolves any infrastructure weaknesses while building on strengths.  Have them prepare tentative proposals that can be executed as soon as budgets become available.  Be sure to focus the business case on how the …
