A new survey tries to uncover what really makes a difference in project portfolio performance.



It's hard to argue with better, faster, smarter — but how exactly do you get there?

A new survey by PA Consulting about project portfolio delivery performance tries to apply a more scientific lens onto that age old question: How can your business or team deliver the most effective outcome?
 
"If you try and look at a level of abstraction or two above the obvious, there is clearly a statistically valid relationship between what companies do and what they get," says Tim Pare, one of PA’s leading program and change managers, who conducted the survey with colleague Scott Friedrichs.
 
"So when you look at these higher performing organizations, they pay attention across the delivery chain because they 'get' that it works like a system, they've figured it out."
 
And part of what they've 'figured out' can be found in the survey's main takeaways:
 
      Maturity is a key driver of delivery effectiveness, with caveats. 
      All the practices influence effectiveness, but not all are equal.
      Lower quartile performers appear to have focused on a …
