As project leaders, a track record of success is important. But what often leads to greater opportunities is the impression we make on people while we are working with them and after we are gone. It is said that we spend upwards of 80 percent of our time communicating. By establishing and maintaining a personal brand, we can influence that communication and take control of the "noise" attached to it.

 
 
“I have to really watch myself at these things,” said the person sitting next to me at an IT conference I attended this spring.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because I am my brand.”
Branding is a powerful thing. When applied to products, it creates a perception in the consumer’s mind and an expectation of what the product will provide. When truly successful, a consumer purchases more than just a product; they acquire an identity, a lifestyle.
Apple Inc.’s “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” campaign is a great example. While it may not be true for everyone, it ‘s a safe bet that since that campaign began, new Mac users weren’t just buying a computer, they were buying a free pass to the cool, hip identity that actor Justin Long plays in those commercials.
