Welcome to the OPM3 department on gantthead. When the Project Management Institute asked me to launch and lead the original OPM3 Program in 1998, I did not realize our team would grow to 800 people across 35 countries. While the size of the original team made the development of this maturity model unique, many other aspects of the program were special. OPM3 became the Standard for choosing the right projects to advance organizational strategies and implementing the processes, structures and behaviors necessary to deliver projects successfully, consistently and predictably. This was described in the Standard for the first time through a combination of the Portfolio, Program and Project Management domains. After OPM3 was released, PMI hired me to help develop assessment tools and PMI certifications for OPM3 users, culminating in OPM3 ProductSuite. The winning combination of a comprehensive Standard with value-added tools to support its implementation led many leaders both inside and outside of PMI to believe that OPM3 was the future, although few would have guessed where the future actually led.

Before the original program to develop OPM3 was completed, the American economy entered a recession. But it soon recovered, and organizations throughout the world adopted OPM3 to capitalize on growth and to cope with talent shortages. Many leaders tolerated inefficiencies in their …
