A Course in Virtual Teams
The ability to work with others from around the globe has become an important skill for project management professionals to master as the business world becomes increasingly international. A new IT course at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers business students an opportunity to interact with geographically dispersed teams and gain a better understanding of how to deal with the many challenges such work settings present.
"Virtual teams are increasingly becoming a ‘normal' mode of operation in business today," says UW-Whitewater professor Andy Ciganek, whose project management course is the first at the school to incorporate the concept of partially distributed teams or virtual teams.
The virtual teams consist of at least two subteams that are separated geographically. Ciganek assigns teams of four to five students who then pair up with students from another subteam at a distant university. The projects usually last around five weeks, and results in a management program a team has designed.
More than 750 students from 15 universities are currently involved in the program, including Pennsylvania State University, Saint Louis University, and the University of Washington. Universities in Spain, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, Switzerland and Singapore are also participating.
