A leadership boot camp uses military techniques to help managers thrive in uncertain times.
Know yourself. Know your people. Know your stuff. “That's what we teach in the Navy when a young ensign goes to the ship,” says former Naval Flight Officer and corporate executive Corwin Karaffa. “Make sure you have the tools in your tool box.”
Karaffa offers the same advice in his latest endeavor — leading a three-day intensive leadership exercise called the “Leadership Boot Camp Experience.” Only now the fresh-faced ensigns are managers and the battleground is corporate America.
Founded in 2000, the program is led by Academy Leadership, a leadership training company comprised of Naval Academy and West Point graduates who have paired business acumen honed as successful CEOs with years of military leadership in the United States Army and Navy. The most recent installment stepped off on November 9-11 at the University of Phoenix-Costa Mesa.
“The first day is spent on getting to know yourself,” says Karaffa of Huntington Beach, Calif. “What kind of person are you? Right brain, left brain? See what kind of a thinker you are and how you react.”
