Project manager Don has to create a report for the PMO on short notice to show why there is a delay in his project. He’s not being taken to the firing squad--the delay is a known problem--he just has to get a complete and accurate chart together. What is worrying him is that he has to incorporate input from his entire virtual team simultaneously to create the deliverable. The last time he tried to get agreement on a deliverable during a conference call it ended like an international diplomatic failure.
Don puts together a conference call and everyone on his team is on and ready. As they start discussions, however, he’s not able to develop a coherent message from the conflicting opinions and information. He cannot get the participants to understand the summary charts he is proposing, so he has to send out examples by e-mail for comments--and this is taking way too long. Even worse, the strongly assertive team members are taking over the meeting again--and he is not getting good insight from all team members. It may be time to run and hide in the Consulate.
