There very well could be a goldmine buried inside your career history. By unearthing it, you can find relevant experiences that will help you open up new career opportunities and achieve future goals.

Did you know that the Business Analyst salary survey released last fall reported that for each year of paid business analysis experience, the average salary in the U.S. rose by $923? In contrast, for each year of paid software development experience, salaries for BAs only rose by $220. This means that it’s not just IT experience that’s important, but actual experience working as a business analyst.

Employers are valuing business analysis experience and paying experienced professionals accordingly.

It might seem like this “years of experience” qualification is outside of your control. However, many business analysts tend to undersell their value and underestimate their relevant experience. If you are undercounting your years of experience you could be hurting your career prospects. Fully understanding your relevant experience is not just about salary, as important as that may be. Depending on your job and career context, an analysis of your full experience might yield the following benefits:
