Peer Pressures, Best-in-Class PPM Habits

A recent Aberdeen survey identified the top pressures in managing IT projects as well as “best-in-class” practices for picking the right projects and managing portfolios and resources.

There are an endless number of projects requested of information technology department, yet IT is restricted by a finite number of resources. As a result, IT departments must balance these project requests with available resources and greatest ROI potential. How are they doing? And how are they doing it?

In a November 2010 survey of more than 420 companies, including 187 IT professionals, Aberdeen examined project portfolio management practices. The report explores the experiences of those IT professionals and the impact PPM solutions have had on optimizing the ROI of the IT project portfolio. Here are some highlights:

Top Pressures of Managing IT Projects. No. 1 (43%): need to use project resources more effectively; No. 2 (38%): contention for specific limited resources; No. 3 (34%): customers frequently change their minds mid-project; No. 4 (30%): too many late projects; and No. 5 (24%): senior management frequently change priorities mid-project.
