A new survey by IIBA and Forrester provides information about business analysts, including backgrounds, skills, responsibilities and aspirations.
Want to know who today’s business analysts are and what they are doing? A new survey compiles some basics about their backgrounds, skills, aspirations and responsibilities. It highlights the diversity of analysts’ work and reinforces the critical nature of communication and collaboration skills.
In third quarter 2010, Forrester Research and the International Institute of Business Analysis partnered to conduct the “Global Business Analyst Online Survey.” There were 1,461 respondents, including business analysts, systems analysts, software requirements engineers and leaders of groups that perform those functions.
Business analysts responding to the survey primarily work for larger companies, with 64 percent noting that their firm has 1,000 or more employees. The industries most frequently served are finance, insurance, business services and IT services, with 58 percent of respondents in those categories.
The survey finds that analyst ranks are growing slightly. Almost half (49 percent) answered yes to the question, “Are there more individuals at your company who play a similar role to yours today than there were a year ago?” In a prior Forrester/IIBA survey in 2009, only 46
