In IT, we dare not stand still or we get run over. With technology’s constant need to advance, many of the problems that we run into though stem from making sure we get the education and experience we need to stay pertinent and forward-looking. While there are many organizations that are able to support their associates and provide them with a variety of educational resources, the harsh reality is that many more these days cannot.
Economics and similar constraints are often the culprits in these situations, both from an employer and employee standpoint. Learning can be pricey--regardless if it comes from recognized institutions and professionals or from seminars and other experiences. Things cost money, and keeping up with technological trends as well as trying to foresee the future can be expensive. Over the years in their efforts to reduce overhead and set a stage where only the most dedicated and/or financially secure can seek higher degrees of learning, organizations have put much of the educational burden back onto the shoulders of their staff.
