Olympic-Sized Project Stakeholders & Your Workforce
Large projects have a “lot more”: There are more stakeholders adding more potential to have communication problems; there are more interactions between more egos adding more conflicts, offenses and disputes; more stakeholders have more control over more of your project workforce. Does this sound like a little more than you’d like to see? Careful tactics will help get you to the end successfully.
Lee is a project manager for a large enterprise that has chosen to change one of its core operations systems. In this Olympic-sized project, there are many business stakeholders from customer service to executives to high-level IT leaders who each manage multiple project team leads. Lee will have to stay on top of the situation to make sure work continues at the high performance required.
From Lee’s Private Project Journal: “This is going to be a very large complex project. I hope that I can learn from my other big project from last year. At the post-mortem, the PMO said it had ‘mixed results’. This time around I know that one thing will have to be different: I will have to manage communications better by knowing more about the people I am working with. I have to get serious about the stakeholder analysis.”
