Analyzing the Project Resources
All of the project planning in the world will not help a project if the resources working on it are not able to do their work. Engaging the project team is not just about telling everyone what to do and when to do it. If the schedule calls for people to work overtime for months on end with no break, it is not going to succeed. There has to be a realistic balance between deadlines and workload. All of this begins with a detailed analysis of the resources assigned to the project plan and the way that the project plan is put together.
In order to analyze the project resources and create a plan that will lead to success instead of a mass exodus of workers, the project manager should go through every step of the planning very carefully. First, the resources are listed; then the tasks are assigned; and finally, the plan is leveled. Leveling the plan for the available resources will keep everyone from being overloaded with too much work. The stress of working on a project with a deadline is enough for most people; adding too much work to their schedule just creates a plan for failure.
Listing the Resources
The project manager should start with a list all of the resources for the project. This list might start off as a “wish list” for the project, or it might be the list of resources available for the project that the sponsors have provided. Regardless of the
