Scrum Masters use different props and materials to plan, estimate, conduct retrospectives and maintain information radiators such as task boards. This collection of “stuff” is key to creating a visible, tactile work environment that engages team members. Here is a detailed look at the contents of one such “Agile Kit.”

Most Scrum Masters will tend to accrue certain "props" over time that help them better carry out their role. When it comes to planning, estimation, retrospectives and creating and maintaining information radiators such as physical task boards, this collection of “stuff” makes life much easier. I call it my “Agile Kit.”

The stuff that any particular Scrum Master has in their Agile Kit will differ, of course, but the core items will probably be the same for most: whiteboard pens, markers and stickies. Effective use of these items depends on having an appropriate amount of accessible wall space, usually in the form of one or more whiteboards. In my opinion, Scrum Masters who solely use electronic aids are missing out on the advantages of a tactile and highly visible work environment. Nothing creates more of a buzz within a team then seeing stories move from left to right through the task board.
