Get Ahead of the Game: Four Tips for Resource Management
Which IT staffers are working on which projects? When will they be finished? Who is available to work on ad-hoc requests? Who has bandwidth to devote to innovating the next big thing?
While these questions might seem like IT Resource Management 101, according to a recent Gartner survey only slightly more than one-third of organizations have general workplace visibility policies in place--and 7% have no resource management process at all.
Yet whether you’re starting from square one or fine-tuning a well-oiled process, consider these four tips for taking a more proactive approach to resource management--and create a more effective, efficient and responsive organization along the way.
1. Take an honest inventory of capacity. Before you figure out where you’re going, you need to know where you are. Now is the time to take a critical look at your current staffing situation, from full-time employees to hourly contractors. Using a cloud PPM solution that automatically collects and categorizes resource data can dramatically simplify the effort and keep information up to date as variables change.
