The “consumerization” of project and portfolio management tools can help to create a larger universe of users across the enterprise and expand the discipline beyond IT. It requires software that is more intuitive, optimized for mobile use, and leverages the advantages of cloud computing.

It takes more than a village to be competitive in today’s marketplace: Companies need to work more collaboratively than ever before across teams, departments and geographies to meet swiftly changing customer demands. Project and portfolio management (PPM) is in a prime position to make this happen, with its ability to help organizations conduct strategic planning, coordinate companywide initiatives, and make the best use of shared, constrained resources.

However, the pressure to bring innovative products and services to market more quickly means PPM software must no longer be kept in a siloed community of power users. The more people across the enterprise who can use it, the more successful the company will be in instituting PPM as a companywide discipline and achieving business goals as a result. This requires PPM software that is consumer-grade.
