Only slightly more than one-third of organizations have general workplace visibility policies in place, and a small percent have no resource management process at all, according to a recent Gartner survey. Which IT staffers are working on which projects? When will they be finished? Who is available for the next project? These questions continue to create challenges for resource managers.
No matter what the company’s size, proactively managing IT resources is the critical component to delivering on-time projects that have been correctly prioritized, scored and approved. Here are some basic guidelines for taking a more proactive approach to resource management. These should stimulate the thought processes to continue building incremental success within your organization.
1. Take inventory. First, understand your inventory of existing resources. Categorize your staffers and contractors by role, skill set, internal/external billing rates and review. Find out if some employees appear to be overcommitted or under assigned. Both
