The Importance of Project Manager Recognition
This is my third annual article for ProjectManagement.com on International Project Management Day; this is also the 10th annual IPM Day, so it’s becoming well established (although we still face those challenging teenage years before it fully matures). It seems to me that as each year goes by, the project manager is becoming more and more critical to organizations; but I can’t help thinking that they are still under-appreciated in many environments.
On the day itself, I will be in Scottsdale for ProjectManagement.com’s “Redefining the PMO” workshop series that has been running all year. They have been wonderful events, and I know that I speak for Michael Wood and Mark Price Perry as well as myself when I say that they have been tremendously rewarding for us as presenters, as well as for attendees. We have seen many people come through those sessions realizing just how important project execution success is to their organizations, and they know that PMs contribute hugely to the success or failure of projects. Yet still, organizations look for ways to drive costs down instead of value up--striving for efficiency over effectiveness, expecting PMs to take on more projects instead of focusing on more thoroughly leading a smaller selection.
On the strategic front, there is increasing recognition for the need to have a strategic portfolio
