In my industry, it isn’t necessary for project managers to hold certifications. However, this means I am left without a way to assess my own processes when I do projects. My manager says some recent failures are because I don’t have them set up sufficiently before I start the implementation. How can I know when I’ve planned enough to actually begin the work of the project?

A. Managers aren’t always the best source of project management guidance. Tell your manager that excessive preparation before beginning the work of the project only delays the completion of your deliverables.

C. Checking your own competency against a standard competency development framework for project managers may give you an idea of where you excel and where there are gaps in your process. Move to find out what those gaps are and work to fill them on your next project.

D. Enroll in an online class in fundamentals of project management through a local college or university. Once you have completed a class like this, your projects will go much more smoothly.
