Did You Say a 'Constraint Diamond'?
Am I an agile coach or a ScrumMaster or just a plain old PM? Am I agile or agile-like or simply wannabee-agile? First it was the nine knowledge areas, and now it is the six domains; do the PMBOK principles still hold me afloat in agile waters, or have the infamous triple constraints and the nine KAs now been driven to exile by Value Driven Delivery and Velocity of PMI’s Agile Framework?
There are probably many project managers like me who are still at the starting point of the agile track, quite enthused to sprint their projects to the winning post, but who are equally overwhelmed by questions like the above as we struggle to remove the web around newer concepts.
A quick look at the rear-view mirror reconfirms that the basic tasks and the project management processes were still clear in the field of vision. However, it demands a shift in focus and emphasis, to support the shift in approach from the traditional sequential waterfall to the newer incremental agile. While the waterfall approach presents the Monitoring & Controlling process group in a continuous loop, the incremental agile sees the remaining project management process groups of Initiation, Planning, Execution and Close as being triggered cyclically with every sprint, thus underscoring the need to be familiar with the KAs.
