Project Managers: Which Hat(s) Will You Wear Today?
When asked what I do for a living, I identify myself as a project manager. I am almost always asked, “What do you do exactly?” Although our job title awareness is growing in popularity, I thought I’d put together a fun picture of what a project manager does by identifying the different hats we could wear during the course of an hour, day or project lifecycle in general.
1. The Artist: A project manager helps you paint a picture of what your idea will look like when it’s actually implemented and spell out the tools, medium/colors you will need to get the job done. The only different between most artists and this “Project Manager” artist is that our inspiration for our art comes from our project sponsor/steering committee, who sets the high-level vision of what they want achieved. We just help paint a more tangible picture of this vision and its requirements.
2. The Risk Manager: One of the main responsibilities of a project manager is to keep a constant eye on risks posed to the success of the project or unintended risks that the project itself may pose to the organization/external environment/stakeholders, etc. A good project manager continuously monitors, discusses and manages these risks keeping the project stakeholders appraised and engaged in the mitigation of these risks.
