Project Management from a Student’s Point of View
Why am I studying project management? What’s in store for project management in the future? What is the difference between what is taught to students in the classroom and project management in the real world?
These are the questions floating around the brains of PM students. This article will cover what project management students (like me) think about the craft, what being a project manager entails, the importance of theoretical or practical knowledge of professors’ teaching, and the usefulness of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) for students.
Student view on project management
Project management seems to be an area in which anyone can excel, regardless of their discipline. My initial introduction to the craft was impressive--it seemed like the field would introduce students to key professional skills such as public speaking, problem solving, leadership and organization.
When professors or other experienced PMs explain the significance of project management, it seems perhaps a little idealized. Coming from a pharmacy background, I valued the use of Pharmacopeia--the main reference in that field of study. After being introduced to PMBOK Guide, I realized just how comprehensive of a field project management was.
