Research shows that it takes both roles--leadership and followership--to get the best results. They are equally valuable. They are complementary. They are distinct. Leadership is one half of a partnership. Marc and Samantha Hurwitz talked to the community membership about being your best in both your leadership and your followership roles, as well as bringing out the best in your teams by coaching for both leadership and followership. 1. By followership for top talent, do you mean that the individual has poor followership or that the team will not follow that person?
We were referring to how top talent is typically moved around an organization much more often than those who aren’t identified as such. They are expected to adapt too many situations and bosses; however, their development is typically focused on leadership skill development and not followership skill development. Thus, lack of followership skill (or lack of paying attention to followership) can trip them up at some point.
2. What type of metrics have you seen regarding senior management being disconnected between the followership? How has this affected the organization?
