Improving Engagement Between IT and Business: Key Roles

Over the years, I have worked in or have been exposed to many roles that require active collaboration and engagement between the business side and the IT side of an organization. My appreciation for such roles has increased greatly over the last four years. This is because technology innovation and progress has helped reduce the traditional barriers that used to exist between business and IT (but not remove, because barriers still exist).

Now we can say "IT is business," and I don't think many people can argue against that because technology is driving transformation in the business model. And now more than ever, a need exists for roles that can work seamlessly between the IT and business sides to bring organizational strategy to fruition.  

Below are some roles that constantly deal with IT and business stakeholders. These roles commonly exist within an IT organization and help improve collaboration and engagement with the business:

  • Business Relationship Manager (BRM) 
  • Project Manager (PM) 
  • Business Analyst (BA) 
  • Change Manager (CM) 
  • Service Manager (SM) 

This list is obviously not exhaustive. There are many other roles and titles, but most of them would probably align well with the roles listed above.
