Are We Headed for an Internet Infrastructure Train Wreck?

It is hard to believe that the turn of the century was 15 years ago. And here we are in 2015--the world of technology is growing faster than ever and shows no indication of slowing down. So what are the implications of these technologies as they evolve and mature at an exponential rate? Can the aging infrastructure of the internet keep pace? Are we headed for an internet infrastructure train wreck?

In April of this year, my article entitled “Hot Technologies for 2015” reviewed the following trending technologies:

  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Smart machines
  • Context rich systems
  • Beacon technology
  • Infinite data centers/Fabric data centers
  • Intelligent drones
  • Smart Virtual Personal Assistants (SVPAs)
  • Web-scale IT
  • 3D printing

Since penning that article, I believe these technologies fall into two major themes:

  • Interconnectivity (information collecting, analyzing and sharing technologies)
  • Everything else

Interconnectivity includes technologies from mobile computing to the Internet of Things; from beacon technology to big data and analytics. It is by far the main focus of most emerging and evolving technology today. There seems to be a convergence happening that is destined to have every human and machine ubiquitously linked to the point where we can all access everything anywhere at any time.
