Time for a PMO Checkup
Organizations must periodically evaluate their PMOs to ensure things are strategically aligned with business goals, and to keep pace with changing roles, responsibilities and missions. Here’s a guide to understanding your PMO’s maturity level and where and how improvement should occur.
No project plans to fail, yet a recent study found that 17 percent of projects crumble and less than two-thirds meet their goals and business intent. The reasons that projects go awry are as diverse as the initiatives that businesses undertake. However, several common themes stand out, including lack of project management processes, uncontrolled delivery, unrealistic budget expectations, and lack of executive commitment. Project volume also plays a part — as the number of projects grows within an organization, so does the risk for mistakes.
A debrief of a project — successful or unsuccessful — is standard protocol following completion. It’s just as important, however, to periodically evaluate the organizational structure responsible for executing the project — specifically the project management office (PMO). As the types, scope, and volume of projects changes within an organization over time, it is essential that the PMO also evolves. Periodic check-ups will help to ensure that the PMO is providing optimal support for a project’s success.
