5 Critical Strategic PM Issues

One of the most frequent questions I get asked as a strategist is, “What do you think the top strategic issues are within this specific industry or segment?” One recent request gave me pause to think about the question within the context of program and project management. After considering over a dozen, I selected the top five based on my experiences of late.

It is also important to note that during my thought process, it became increasingly apparent that my answers were directly related to the areas of strategic program and project management in which I practice. Those who work in other environments will surely have different responses. Here they are in order of criticality:

  1. Demands to accelerate development efforts
  2. The seemingly ever-increasing pace of change
  3. The growing human resources talent shortage
  4. Anticipating customer demands in the near-term
  5. Lack of practice experience with emerging technologies

The role of the program or project manager is challenging to say the least. However, when you factor in these strategic challenges, the intensity of the challenge intensifies to a level that has never been seen before in this profession.
