At this time of year, people around me are planning new resolutions for the future. However, my experience is that it is a useless exercise. The management where I work is not attuned to what we need for projects, my teams are less than ideal and, if I am honest, I worry about my own abilities as a project manager. How do I move forward?

A. All project managers feel this way, particularly if they have had a stressful year. Ignore these feelings and they will go away in a week or so.

B. Perhaps the issue rests with the self-talk you are unwittingly feeding yourself. It may have been a survival tactic at some point, but it may be time to retrain yourself and your automatic internal judgments.

C. It may be time for you to change jobs. Some people find that although they are marginally successful, their skill sets and enjoyment of certain kinds of work may make them a better fit for a different role in the organization.

D. Wear a rubber band around your wrist. Ask a close associate to snap it hard each and every time they see you deep in thought, hear you say a negative remark or watch you be nice to a team member who has not performed up to your expectations.
