The ART of a Successful Project Manager

So you think that after memorizing A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)--realizing that the WBS is the holy grail of project management and finally receiving your PMP certification--you are all set, right? Think again.

I’ve created a simple acronym that I’d like to share. I’ve maintained and utilized these principles during my 20-plus years working across multiple vertical market segments, and they have complimented PMBOK Guide standards. I’ve broken it down into the following three categories:

1. Accountability: We’ve all been tasked as PMs to perform in various markets. One of the key attributes throughout my career has been to be accountable for all my actions. When we take on the “projects” or challenges of the job, we must understand that without being accountable for the deliverables and the activities of the team, the PM will not succeed--and thereby create an environment of discontent. When I engage in a project, I take ownership of all aspects for the project. Accountability becomes paramount for the success of the company and the team.

2. Relationships: Relationships are one of the key traits for a PM to be successful. I’ve learned that by developing an overall relationship with the key stakeholders and gaining their respect, it …
