In the project management profession, we are often confounded with situations where we need to have a crucial conversation with our stakeholders or team members. It is one of the things that is often ignored and could impact the success of the project. Here I will try to help you with some techniques and approaches in dealing with such conversations.

People avoid difficult conversations, or they botch them and lose their temper. Do you need to confront people about their behavior, but you just aren’t sure what to say? Don’t put it off. To plan for difficult conversations, remember to use the “WAC” technique. State clearly:

  1. What behavior bothers you
  2. Ask the person to change that behavior
  3. Check in to hear the response and confirm that he or she heard you

While doing so, pay attention to your body language, such as making eye contact; it is just as important as what you say. Expect the unexpected, as you can’t control the other person’s reaction; consider how you’ll handle a range of responses.

To prevent conflict in the first place, take steps to create rapport with others. One of the keys here is to ask for permission to give feedback before you apply this technique. Always ask: “Can I give you feedback?” Most respondent will say yes.
