Communication: The Leader's Language
No one would disagree with me when I say that communication is critical in all walks of life. But people often have the wrong understanding of the term; very often, they think that they have communicated simply by speaking or using some form of non-verbal communication.
Communication has three elements: the sender, the message and the recipient. Typically, a sender delivers the message to the receiver; the most important part is that the recipient understand it the way it was intended. The intent is the most important aspect of communication and needs the most attention.
Communication is the medium through which one articulates vision, strategy, change and feedback. Hence, it is important to make sure it is effective. It is most critical for leaders to have effective communication skills as they are the ones delivering important strategy and vision. If they fail to articulate that effectively, it could lead to unintended consequences.
You may have come across many definitions of “leader.” The most common trait of an effective leader is someone who inspires others to act. Effective leaders use language to communicate their thoughts and motivate others. By choosing their words with care, they touch the audience and affect their actions.
