Setting Up a PMO to Succeed
The project management office within an organization can fulfill a multitude of duties, but the primary duty and reason for its existence is to help projects succeed. In order to fulfill that duty, it needs to be organized well and strategically placed into the organization where it can positively impact the projects being planned and executed. This will not happen simply because a PMO is created; this will only happen when the leadership team takes a close look at how to set up it up to succeed.
Duties of the PMO
In order for the project management office to succeed, everyone needs to understand what the duties of the PMO actually are in the day-to-day workings of the office. Different companies and organizations can view project management offices very differently. In one organization, the PMO may be where all the project managers work and they are assigned out to projects. In other organizations, the PMO may simply be the repository of knowledge about projects and project execution. They are called upon to set up projects and make sure the projects are run correctly, but they do not get fully engaged in the project on a daily basis. The PMO and the rest of the organization should have a full understanding of how the PMO operates.
