Portfolio Management: Just Do It!

Each year, the PMO Symposium® presents a great opportunity to meet and network with other portfolio managers and PMO directors from around the world. In this year’s opening session, PMI President and CEO Mark A. Langley shared some of the research that has been done for the Thought Leadership Series, announced each year at this event.

Representatives from the Boston Consulting Group, who covered one topic area within the research, presented information, statistics and action items regarding benefits management. Some of the statistics that were presented were fascinating and validating to many of us in the profession listening. One of these statistics showed that while 70% said that benefits realization management is a very high or extremely high priority, there are very few examples of maturity in this area.

Another statistic that was a little harder to hear said that public companies currently have a one-in-three chance of being delisted (go out of business) within the next five years—six times the rate experienced 40 years ago. While there were many barriers and challenges that were discussed that led to this statistic, the Thought Leadership Series conversation encouraged attendees to talk to one another about the practices within our own companies and how we could improve upon them—to close the gap and put action plans in place to show the value …
